How to sync Google Calendar with Outlook

Have you ever considering trying to sync Google Calendar with the Outlook email client so that all of your appointments appear together? You should; it's easy and convenient. Below we outline two methods for synchronizing these services.

How do I sync Outlook with Google Calendar?

There are two ways to sync your Google Calendar with Outlook. The easiest method is through the dedicated Outlook app, which is explained in the first method.
The second method relates to the desktop browser-version of Outlook. This is slightly more convoluted, so if you're happy to download the Outlook app, that's what we'd recommend first and foremost.
Note, however, that both methods work independently of each other: syncing with the app won't sync with the online client. If you wish for both, you will need to perform both processes.

Synchronize the Outlook app with Google Calendar

First, download and install the Outlook app from the Google Play link below, if you haven't already.
Download Microsoft Outlook Here

When you first launch the Outlook app, you will need to enter the email address of the email account you wish Outlook to be responsible for. Following this, you'll have to select the appropriate account type, and sign in.

Outlook will ask for permission to access certain files, you must hit yes to proceed. Next, you will be asked if you would like to add another account: this is when you should add your Google account.
If you have already been using this app, you can head straight to the app settings (via the cog button at the top right of the landing page) and hit add account.

When you're finished, Outlook will be capable of displaying information from your two accounts and you will be able to navigate to the calendar page via the tab at the bottom of the app's landing page. However, nothing will be displayed in your calendar just yet.

The final step is to tap the hamburger icon at the top-left and select the Google Calendar information you wish to display. Then that's it, Outlook should now be synced with Google Calendar.

Synchronize with Outlook.com with Google Calendar

Before you can sync the Outlook.com web client with Google Calendar, you need to copy the private address of the calendar you wish to sync. It works like this:
  • Navigate to calendar.google.com and log in.
  • Click on the cog icon at the top-right, and then click Settings .
  • Select the Calendar tab and then click on the calendar for which you want to set up the synchronization.
In the section called Private address you see two buttons: XML and ICAL. Click on ICAL and then right-click the URL that is displayed to you. Copy it to the clipboard and close the dialog box by clicking OK.

Now your home address via shared calendar has yet to be subscribed with Outlook. For this you have to proceed as follows:
  • Visit the web interface of the Outlook calendar and login.
  • Click the add calendar option at the top-left of the page, and select from internet.
  • In the menu that opens, paste your previously copied calendar link into the Calendar URL field.
  • In field calendar name give it a meaningful name, such as "Google".
  • Hit save at the top of the box.
The import process can take several minutes. When it finishes, you should end up back in the calendar overview, your Google Calendar should.

Limitations

These processes are not without their limitations.
  • Your calendar is not updated in real time, only at fixed intervals.
  • The sync works only in one direction i.e. you cannot schedule appointments for your Google account with Outlook.

Alternatives

Anyone who is not satisfied with these solutions can try using a synchronization program or app. There are a number of options out there, but most are paid, and not all work reliably. Two of the more popular are gSyncit or Sync2: give these a go if you wish.
